Free Comedy at the Edinburgh Festival

Arguably, the real, original fun of the Edinburgh Fringe lies in spontaneity. Picture this: while wandering aimlessly down the Royal Mile you are accosted by a man in 16th century period dress pointing you towards his comedy on Sir Walter Raleigh at the underbelly, on the way you are given a leaflet to go to a silent movie atop Carlton Hill, live, and complete with a 22 peace orchestra. You couldn’t make it up.

How Scotland’s Capital continues to Thrive!

The City of Edinburgh is increasingly well known for being both a financial institution and a global tourism hotspot. These industries have continued to see growth despite the ‘credit crunch’.

Edinburgh continues to be considered a key centre for financial growth and has proven to be an ideal city for a business to develop, both on the high street, with up and coming chains such as Urban Outfitters opening up alongside old favourites like Primark, and in the business sector - the headquarters of Tesco Personal Finance, attracted to the Nation’s Capital, recently relocated to Haymarket, creating two hundred jobs.

How the Fringe just keeps getting Better

During 2009 the Edinburgh Festival Fringe ticket sales hit a record high of more than 1.85m tickets sold for the event; a sales increase of 9% from the previous year. The reason for this surge in sales is because many people decided to holiday in the UK rather than going on holidays abroad due to the recession. For many 2009 was the best festival in 20 years.

Getting cheap accommodation at the Fringe

After five years of letting accommodation for festival performers and visitors we have noticed two things.  You want your accommodation as close as possible to the venues and you want it for as cheap as possible.

With the current financial condition of the country we understand the latter is going to be even more important to our clients this year so we have come up with some tips to show you how to get the cheapest accommodation possible.  Firstly, we’ll take a quick look at why it is so expensive, which might help us find ways to bring the cost down.

Scotland on the Silver Screen

Edinburgh’s economy saw an increase in the income from films and the television industry in 2009. The number of days spent filming rose by ten per cent. Local businesses especially those providing nourishment and shelter benefit from each film and television production the city attracts, the spend in 2009 was £4.2 million. During 2009 there were 4 films (Outcast, Imogene, Cosi and The Whicker Tree), three television productions, two documentaries, two commercials and four entertainment shows shot in and around Edinburgh.

How to catch a Tiger

Watching Tiger Wood’s public apology this week was like watching a bit of cringe reality TV.  While there is absolutely no useful information to be learned from watching, you can’t tear yourself away from it because you weirdly enjoy watching a bit of humiliation sometimes.

Whether this had anything to do with Open Golf Rentals getting a large increase in bookings over the weekend for the 2010 Open Golf Championship, I’m not very sure.  He certainly didn’t confirm his appearance and I have no knowledge of him booking any luxury St. Andrew’s properties.  It might however have turned people away from complaining about the cold and looking forward to the summer golf season ahead!

Finally, Edinburgh Tastes as Good as it Looks

Edible Edinburgh

Traditionally, Scotland has not exactly been famous for haut cuisine; indeed, you’d be forgiven for thinking the country which brought deep-fried Mars Bars and Haggis (sometimes deep-fried) to the international table couldn’t compete on an International scale.

You’d be wrong though. The Edinburgh Stop of the International Taste Festival (heralded as the ‘World’s Greatest Restaurant Festival’) pays homage to Scotland’s Thriving Culinary Culture as May draws to a close (final dates TBC).

Destiny Scotland regularly houses those looking for temporary accom in Edinburgh for a variety of reasons.  One of the main causes is bursting or leaking of pipes in old Edinburgh houses.  During the cold winter months, these problems can easily occur and we can often offer immediate housing to those who need it and work with the insurance companies to provide full details so the tenants are covered.
