Rent Edinburgh Flats has seen a noticeable rise in the number of
international students and visiting professors looking for
accommodation in Edinburgh. On the student side, it is well known that
the current world economy is leading to students continuing their
education instead of facing the poor job market at this time.
Visiting students and academics use our services since they are often
here for less than six months and therefore long term letting agencies
won't entertain signing them up to less than a six month Short Assured
Tenancy (SAT).
International students studying at Edinburgh University, Napier or
Heriot-Watt for only a semester find they have to pay council tax as
they are not exempt under Edinburgh council tax rules which state that
in order to qualify for exemption they must be studying for at least
21 hours per week, for at least 24 weeks per year at the University.
However, we believe landlords should welcome semester students.
Firstly, due to the fact this accommodation can be more difficult to
obtain, students are willing to pay a slightly higher price for the
shorter period. The breaks in between semesters also allow landlords
to benefit from renting their property for the busy Hogmanay period as
well as the popular summer months.
If you are a student and would like to learn more about the
accommodation we have on offer for semester students please contact
us. Likewise, if you are a landlord who like more information about
this market, please get in touch.
