Traditionally, Scotland has not exactly been famous for haut cuisine; indeed, you’d be forgiven for thinking the country which brought deep-fried Mars Bars and Haggis (sometimes deep-fried) to the international table couldn’t compete on an International scale.
You’d be wrong though. The Edinburgh Stop of the International Taste Festival (heralded as the ‘World’s Greatest Restaurant Festival’) pays homage to Scotland’s Thriving Culinary Culture as May draws to a close (final dates TBC).
Inverleith Park becomes a hot pot, mixing the freshest new talent on the culinary scene with world-famous Michelin-starred Masters as they literally cook up a storm. Watch professional chefs creating their signature dishes live on the Taste Theatre; fancy yourself a Budding Blumenthal? Then try your hand in the Taste Kitchen experimenting with new dishes or sampling cocktails made by expert Baristas.
The Fringe Festival wouldn’t smell the same without Edinburgh’s own Foodies Festival (13-15th August); or for a real taste of tartan have a Haggis on Burns Night or St. Andrew’s Day (don’t forget the neeps).
But don’t worry if you miss them; from Michelin Starred restaurants like the world famous Witchery to the excellent Mosque Kitchens (a Student Favourite, run between prayers by an Islamic Charity beneath the Mosque!), the nation’s capital finally tastes as good as it looks.
